- Nutrient Cycling: The movement of nutrient elements through various components of the ecosystem.

Productivity
Productivity is measured as the rate of biomass production per unit area over a time period.
- Primary Production: The amount of biomass or organic matter produced per unit area over a time period by plants during photosynthesis.
- Gross Primary Productivity (GPP): The total rate at which organic matter is produced during photosynthesis.
- Net Primary Productivity (NPP): The biomass available for consumption by herbivores and decomposers after plants have used some for respiration.
- Secondary Productivity: The rate of formation of new organic matter by consumers (e.g., herbivores like rabbits).

Decomposition
This is the process where decomposers (like bacteria and fungi) break down detritus (dead organic matter) into simpler inorganic substances.
- Fragmentation: The process where detritivores (e.g., earthworms) break detritus into smaller particles.
- Leaching: Water-soluble inorganic nutrients move down into the soil layers and precipitate as unavailable salts.
- Catabolism: Bacterial and fungal enzymes degrade detritus into simpler inorganic substances.
